2018 Honorary Cruise Marshal

Tim Schultz

Growing up in rural Alberta Tim was first diagnosed with Diabetes at age 6 and was put on insulin by age 7.
In 2000 Tim began to struggle with diabetes as it was now harder to control.

In 2001 Tim was classed as a brittle diabetic meaning the disease was now in full control with limited chance of regaining independent freedoms.
In 2002 he was invited into the Edmonton Protocol clinical trial program and received his first successful islet cell transplant in 2004. In 2005 Tim was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal for his service to the Province of Alberta as a clinical trials patient and his dedication to advancing research throughout Alberta. Tim went on to share this award with the Islet Transplant team members, researchers and staff at the University of Alberta where a plaque permanently hangs in their honour.

Tim currently works in the oil industry and holds a Journeyman Partsman designation. Prior to returning to work in the oil industry, from 2008 to 2013 Tim spent 5 years working for the Government of Alberta as the Chief of Staff for the Minister of Advanced Education and Technology, the Chief of Staff for the Deputy Premier and President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance and finally as the Chief of staff for the Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education.

In these roles his influence helped shape the Alberta Innovates Research files and he was instrumental in securing funds to outfit the Li Ka Shing Centre at the University of Alberta which is home to the Alberta Diabetes Institute. As well Tim worked closely with industry and private donors to advance medical research in the Province of Alberta.
As members of the Edmonton Cosmopolitan Club Tim and his wife Patty have one daughter and they currently live in St. Albert.
